LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP

Deadlines for the Donnie Arthur Memorial turfgrass scholarship, as well as the "Legacy" scholarship are October 15th.  Some children ofMembers of the Alabama GCSAA are eligible for the Legacy Scholarship.  Attached is a list of Legacy Scholarship Guidelines as well as an application in the event that you know someone who qualifies.  Below are the criteria for applying for the Legacy Scholarship.  (Please get your application in prior to the deadline in order to be considered.)

General

The AGCSA Legacy Scholarship Program offers educational aid to the children and grandchildren of AGCSA members. The award of $2,000 each year is funded by AGCSA and administered by The Donnie Arthur Scholarship Program.

Applications will be reviewed by an independent committee consisting of the AGCSA Board of Directors. All decisions of the committee will be final. Applicants will be notified by mail of their status by November 15th of the year submitted. All scholarship award checks will be made payable to the institution.

Eligibility

  1. One or more of the applicant’s parents or grandparents must have been an AGCSA member for five or more consecutive years and must be a currently active AGCSA member in one of the following classifications: A, Superintendent Member, C, Affiliate, Retired-A, Retired –B or AA –Life or vendor. The competition is open to natural or adoptive offspring of AGCSA members. Children or grandchildren of deceased members are also eligible if the member was currently active at the time of his or her death.
  1. The student must be studying or planning to study a field unrelated to golf course management.
  2. The student must be enrolled full-time at an accredited institution of higher learning, or in the case of high school seniors, must be accepted at such an institution for the next academic year. Graduating high school seniors must attach a letter of acceptance to their application.
  3. Past winners are ineligible to apply the following year. They may reapply after a one year hiatus.
  4. Although any number of students from the same family may apply, only one student per family will be eligible to receive an award.
Criteria
  1. Applicants will be evaluated based on academic achievement, extracurricular and community involvement, leadership and outside employment.
  2. The student’s composition of an original 100 word essay relating to his/her goals. The essay must be original and not previously submitted to AGCSA.
  3. Financial need is not a factor in the selection.
How to Apply

Students must complete and submit the attached application form and supply the following under one cover:

 

  1. Transcripts from all high schools and colleges attended.
  2. Typed original essay.
  3. Graduating high school seniors must attach a collegiate letter of acceptance to their application.
  4. All applications must be POSTMARKED by October 15 of the year submitted.

Scholarship Program

The goal of the Alabama Golf Course Superintendents Associations Scholarship Program is to support future golf course superintendents in their educational needs.

The Alabama Golf Course Superintendents Association is committed to awarding one two thousand dollar scholarship annually to this purpose. The Association will award a quantity of one $2,000.00 scholarship annually at its Annual Meeting in November. The Association’s check will be awarded directly to the student. If there are no eligible applicants, the Association reserves the right to designate the scholarship funds accordingly.

Scholarships are to be awarded only to full time students (i.e. 12 credit hours per semester). Scholarship applicants must be enrolled in an agricultural major emphasizing turfgrass management. Minimum grade point average of 2.0 will be required. Application deadline is October 15th of the year. Marketing of the program is to occur through turf management advisors at universities and the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. Applications may also be obtained through the ASGCA executive secretary.

The Scholarship Chairman is to recommend those candidates he feels worthy of the award to the board for final approval.
